The stables at Dunster Castle in Dunster, on the borders of North Devon and Somerset over Exmoor are some of the best examples of early 17th century stall stableling. The turned vertical pillars are particularly beautiful and had been painted yellow. The hay manger sits behind the rails and the mangers can be seen running along the wall. The floor is flat local stone laid into large cobbles. There is a drain gully that can be seen on the right of the picture. The stalls would have been divided by wooden poles suspended on chains. These are some of the best preserved early stables in the country. I didn't go around the castle as I had no time to, but I wished I squeezed it in somehow, the stables were beyond the castle grounds and free to enter, the national-trust shop was in part of it, the stables themselves were quite eerie and felt haunted, I guess they were. The exit ahead leads to another part of the stables were coaches and chariots were attached to the horses and Henry VII used it whilst staying in the castle, they take great pictures, I do have the front of the castle and other parts of Dunster Village to download yet, it was a wonderful sunny day there the best day I had in my Devon/Somerset trip
