Description
Another view of Southport Beach taken on a different day when the sky wasn't as clear but it was still very sunny and warm, a closer look of Southport's skyline with Holy Trinity Church in Manchester Road/Houghton Street being the highest building seen, Southport did have some multi apartments built but that was scrapped after the 1960's. and only allowed a certain height when built. As Southport is below sea level tall buildings look obscure within the town and overshadow the scenery. Southport used to be a town of many churches, but sadly due to lack of attendance in later years and maintenance being so expensive, alot of them were demolished. Chapel Street's chapel must have been one of the first to go during the 1950's and Duke Street annilated about 5 or more of its churches before my very eyes, during the 1980's and 90's; the skyline would have looked so different when they were all standing erect along this Skyline, like pinnacles touching the sky. People can be seen in the distance walking towards the Ocean Plaza, a shopping, cafe, restuarant and hotel and cinema complex built in recent years, it even has a bowling alley and a couple of great pub food places a great tourist attraction that works very well. The grass that is dotted on the beach has been difficult to control whereas it was ok when the Sandhills occupied some of Southport Beach that where removed, which I think was a mistake, the grass is still trying to find its removed home, leave nature alone and it wouldn't have been a problem, the Sandhills were a natural sea defence, they wouldn't have had to build a sea wall if they left well alone. The Sandhills are still standing in Ainsdale, Birkdale, Freshfield and Formby part of this coastal region and have an abundance of wildlife on them, including the natterjack toad and ramblers treck along there often. There is a type of wetland, a bird sanctuary of The RSVP further to the left of picture so the grasses are ok towards that region supporting the many rare birds that come to roost there in the marshes.
