Description
During the 1960's when everyone was busy listening to Rock and pop music along came the Walker brothers with their intense beautiful ballads and their wonderful harmonies, I was besotted by Scott the lead vocalist's blonde good looks and deep crooning melodious voice and so were a number of others, they were instant chart toppers alongside the Beatles and the Stones, with songs such as The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore and Make it Easy On Yourself. I think this group did the best version of Porgie and Bess's Summertime...and their song No Regrets that was recorded after their split in 1975 was something else. John Walker whose real name was John Maus was just as good looking and taller than Scott, his voice matched well with Scott's in harmonies and he took the lead vocals at times, John died in May 2011 aged 67yrs of liver disease and was performIng right up to March that year in the solid silver 1960's show. I did this portrait painting of Scott in Indian ink then around the same time in 1966 that I did my painting of Peter Noon in the same style with quick brush strokes and added oil pastel on the hair.this portrait has gouache on the hair. Scott's real name was Scott Engel I called him Scott Angel as he had such angelic looks and a wonderful singing voice of unusual Baritone notes. Gary Walker was Gary Leeds and was quite small in height compared to the other 2 and had dark hair, Gary was their drummer and played drums for Elvis before he joined the Walker brothers. I wish I did more of this style in ink brush work, I did do a 3rd one of Georgie Fame that wasn't as good and never did another, I have done one of Ray Davies in ink and oil pastel in full colour and its on here at FineArtAmerica. I was still an art student when I did this Scot Walker portrait around 1966 and it has survived to this day and has been on show at the local art gallery at The annual Palette Club exhibition that has to pass an acceptance jury so I consider it one of my best and oldest works a unique picture and singer too. By the late 1960's Scott went solo releasing his famous Scott albums 1,2,3 and 4 the Walker Brothers reformed in 1975 with the lovely ballad, No Regrets, which was a huge hit, and after a short time together they went their separate ways. Makes a wonderful print on all surfaces and looks great as a tee shirt
