Description
His name was Steve, (not to be confused with another Steve I was involved with as he came later in my life), we used to write to each other in the1960's when I was only 17 he was near the same age, he advertised on the pen pal page in The Jackie, I think he came from Northampton, I remember saying my older brother was born there, I can't really remember what he did for a living wether he was a student like myself, everything is vague, but I remember this painting and why I did it, I had intentions of sending it to him, but didn't think it was good enough...I got his likeness ok without a doubt as I had a photo he sent me in Black and white he was pictured with his father in a garden or field as there was a lot of grass in background hence the green in portrait. I remember he wore a bi-colour shirt and it was top fashion then, his was in navy and white rather than the usual black, he had a jacket slung over his shoulder in the same colour, I painted that in there, I did it in colour from his description of himself in his letters; it was a full length photo I only did a portrait from it as I was going to send it in the regular post size but never did. The photo was lost and somehow we stopped writing, life got in the way, but I didn't really want to stop writing to him as I was terrified of my parents finding out I had a boy pen pal. I therefore hid this painting in my mother's unused old wireless until my elder brother discovered it a few months ago as he had alot of my mother's things, I'd forgotten all about it, and gave me tremors when I saw it...as it was such a long time ago. I can't remember his surname, but it will come to me eventually. I'm sure I have one of his letters somewhere, I will have a look, I shouldn't have disregarded this artwork as its a very expressive portrait and loosely applied, it looks rather good now I've seen it after all those years. I signed it JM my initials then before I was married and before I used my second name Violet.
