Description
Georgie Fame, do you remember him, the gorgeous auburn haired piano playing pop star of the 1960's who's music derived from jingle writing and radio Caroline and a backing band for Billy Fury, his style was jazz and blues combined with a tail end of pop and there was a band who backed him called the Blue Flames with a saxist amongst them that gave an upbeat drifting sound to his style....yes he gave birth to alternative music which is big hit material these days with bands like Coldplay and Roxy Music, Sting and Simply Red to name but a few...the man was turned down by the BBC saying it won't catch on people like the Beatles, Stones, Animals etc but it did...a pirate radio station aired his music and between the 2 they both shot to Fame both Georgie and his band with radio Caroline with the massive hit Yeh Yeh! an alternate or mockery of The Beatle Yeah Yeah Yeah! ...wow the BBC can be so wrong and they still do that to unknown talents and known ones too like Cliff Richards lol I did this painting in Indian ink brushwork around the time of his fame in the same style as my pictures of Herman, Scott Walker and Ray Davies...it isn't as great a likeness as those others but it's captured him in the atmosphere of his facial movements as he sings...I loved his music and had his singles in my collections in those days...Getaway was originally an Esso petrol or gas ad that hit the charts...he also collaborated with Alan Price the pianist from The Animals with a hit called Rosetta and it was amazing watching the 2 of them play the keys together...those were the days. Since then he has collaborated with a number of artists such as Jamie Cullum and Van Morison with their lean to jazz style and is still out there crooning to the keys, he and the blue flames were one of the great veterans that played the famous Flamingo jazz club of the 50's and 60's and there he picked up his unique jazz style intertwined with blues and pop, Georgie and his Blue Flames are one of the great bands of that era and so under rated, I would love to see a revival of his works
